Canadian Centre on Disability Studies is the lead agency in the project "Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities in Ukraine", funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). This five-year project (April 2008 - March 2013) is the result of hard work and commitment by many partners in Canada and Ukraine to inclusion and rights of people and children with disabilities. In this project, CCDS works with key partners in Canada, namely Grant MacEwan University, and Ukrainian partners include Step by Step, the National Assembly of Disabled of Ukraine and the Institute of Special Education. Central to this project are two pilot regions: Lviv and Simferopol (Crimea).

CCDS will continue to work in partnership with the University of Manitoba, the Province of Manitoba, and disability organizations from all over Canada to create new partnerships with organizations from various sectors in Canada.

The project is based on equal partnership among academics and government, with a focus on the social model of disability, gender equality, and knowledge transfer. The project will focus on changing attitudes towards disability amongst government representatives, educators, general educational institutions, and public organizations by their inclusion and comprehensive participation, in building inclusive educationthrough policy development, strengthening of civil society, and training of specialists.

The expected impact of the project is to strengthen civil society and improve policies that develop, support and promote inclusive education for children with disabilities and their families in Ukraine.
